Serving People...Changing Lives
Empty Bowls is an international project designed to fight hunger, personalized by artists and art organizations at the community level. RCS partnered with Craven Arts Council to present New Bern's first, and very successful, Empty Bowls event on Febraury 11, 2010 at Temple Baptist Church.
Mark February 10, 2011 on your calendar now for our next year's event!
Many thanks to our local letter carriers and to the community for supporting this year's Stamp Out Hunger. Because of the generosity of the good folks in the New Bern area, on May 8, 2010, letter carriers delivered over 19,000 pounds of food to RCS!! This is a record!!
Several volunteers were on hand for almost a week to help sort, box and store all the food. This will supply our food pantry for several months.
Crop Walk, Sunday, October 3
Plan now to join walkers as they raise money to meet hunger needs here at home and internationally. 25% of the money raised stays in New Bern.
Neuse River Bridge Run, Saturday, October 16
Particpants in this year's Bridge Run will have the opportunity to cross the new bridge into downtown New Bern. Pick your course: 5K, 10K, SuperKids Fun Run. New this year is the addition of a Half Marathon. Learn more and register at www.newbernrun.com.
"Thinking Outside the Cardboard Box," Thursday, October 21
Just because you don't see the stereotypical bag lady or disheveled man with a "will work for food" sign does not mean that there are no homeless people in our community. We invite you to join RCS, Neuse River Community Development Corporation, Eastern Carolina Council, and Craven County Habitat for Humanity in a one-day summit at Garber United Methodist Church to learn how to recognize and address homelessness. Call Bobbie Hewlette, 633-2767, for more information.
